SQL Server 2017 End of Support: Upgrade & Migration

SQL Server 2017 end of support

SQL Server 2017 support ends in October 2027. Is your plan ready?

Microsoft ends extended support for SQL Server 2017 on October 12, 2027. After that date, your databases no longer receive regular security updates or Microsoft technical support. Planning, testing and migrating take months, so the time to decide is now. We help you decide, quickly and with evidence, whether to upgrade in place, migrate to Azure or AWS, or consolidate, and what it will cost.

What end of support means for you

  • No regular security updates. New vulnerabilities in SQL Server 2017 will no longer be fixed through regular updates.
  • No standard Microsoft support. When something breaks, there will be no routine support path.
  • Audit and compliance pressure. Unsupported database software is a common finding in HIPAA, PCI and SOC reviews and in cyber-insurance questionnaires.
  • Vendor compatibility. Application vendors increasingly certify only supported SQL Server versions.

SQL Server 2017 is not the only version to watch: SQL Server 2016 support has already ended, and anything before SQL Server 2022 is already out of mainstream support.

A realistic timeline

  1. Now to early 2027: decide. Inventory, compatibility review and a target decision for every application.
  2. Spring and summer 2027: move. Test, migrate and cut over in waves, with a rollback plan for each.
  3. Before October 12, 2027: finish. The last instances are moved, or consciously covered by a bridge while they are.

Your options

  1. Upgrade in place or side by side. Move to SQL Server 2022 or 2025 on your own infrastructure, with compatibility testing and a rollback plan.
  2. Migrate to the cloud. Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure VMs, or AWS, chosen for your workloads, not by default.
  3. Consolidate while you move. An upgrade is the best moment to reduce instance sprawl and licensing cost.
  4. Buy time only where needed. Where Microsoft offers paid Extended Security Updates, they can bridge a gap. They are a bridge, not a destination.

Upgrade & Migration Readiness Assessment

A fixed-scope engagement that gives you a decision-ready plan:

  • Inventory: the SQL Server instances found, with version, edition and the databases and applications that depend on them.
  • Compatibility review: features, deprecated functionality and application vendor requirements that affect the target version or platform.
  • Target options compared: in-place upgrade vs. Azure vs. AWS vs. consolidation, with risk, effort and cost for each.
  • Licensing and consolidation: where you can run fewer instances, cores or licenses after the move.
  • High availability design: the right HA and disaster recovery architecture for the new platform.
  • Security baseline: find permission and configuration risks before you move, so they don’t follow you onto the new platform.
  • Roadmap: a prioritized, phased plan with effort estimates your team or ours can execute.
